Thanks for visiting Hunter’s Hives! I am Dwayne Hunter and have been a hobby beekeeper for about 10 years. I became acquainted with honey bee hives while growing up: we lived on a farm and my uncle had several hives on the property. I watched him ‘rob’ hives of honey. It was fascinating!
Fast forward several decades, I now live in an urban environment. About 10 years ago, I happened to see a booklet advertising a Beginning Beekeeping short course offered through a local CareerTech center. Since, according to my wife, I like different hobbies, this caught my attention. I took the course, purchased my first packages of bees, set up two hives in our backyard. I was immediately, forever entranced by these pollinators.
Today I am still a hobbyist beekeeper. I have a full time job that keeps me very busy but beekeeping remains a passion. I manage about 10 hives that are housed in our yard plus yards of friends who enjoy watching honey bees and eating honey.
I continue to learn about honey bees through reading, research, and talking to others about their colonies and approach to beekeeping and honey bee management. I am a member of the Oklahoma State Beekeepers Association and several local beekeeping clubs. In August, 2025 I obtained my Master Beekeeper Certification from Cornell University.
The goal of this website is to be a source of information to those interested in beekeeping and relay insight through my experiences.
